Bring On the New Year

The new year is three days away. Are you ready?

I’m ready but frankly, I’m beat. It’s been quite a year, and especially these last six months have been  busier and fuller than they have in years. (Maybe rivaled only by my grad school days in New York, when I had three jobs, was writing a thesis, teaching creative writing to undergrads, and, oh yeah, staying out until all hours.)

I took four days to run around the state live-gramming for the @TravelNewMexico Instagram account, which was fun. My focus was places all new to me, and every day it was a reminder of what an awesome state this is. So many interesting sights, even in the dead of winter.

I’ll post more of my photographs from the Scamp in the next couple weeks, but I wanted to share this image from the Very Large Array, west of Socorro. Remember the movie “Contact” with Jodie Foster? It’s like that. There are 27 of these 82-foot-wide antennas, which put together make up what’s essentially a 22-mile wide telescope.

For the last post of the year, it seemed fitting. There’s something so hopeful about all those antennas, searching the skies for other worlds, other lives, and other meaning. There was a sense of curiosity, wonder, and, yes, readiness for what comes next. So in that spirit, I’ll leave you with this and look forward to seeing you all in 2016.

Emilie – The VLA is fascinating, definitely worth a visit. And the visual is so different, all those antennas pointing hopefully at the sky. Happy New Year to you!

  2. And now . . . I want to watch Contact again.

    Happy New Year!!!
