What It’s Like In San Diego for the Weekend

Like we talked about last week, sometimes it’s good to get a change of scenery if you need a jolt of fresh energy.

I grew up in San Diego, and for years I took it for granted that my hometown was a city that a some folks dream of living in. I had a lot of rough years here – I was mostly a mess until my mid-20s – but coming back to it now, with a lot of distance (and therapy), means I can appreciate how nice it is.

And going from tiny Taos to sprawling San Diego is a fun change. I wouldn’t want to live here full time again, but for a couple months I’m happy to take advantage of all this city has to offer.

This weekend was a good example, even though it was more packed than normal. First off – Hamilton! Yep, I managed to get tickets – last row in the mezzanine – and though I wish I could have been closer, it was fantastic. If you get a chance, see why Lin-Manuel Miranda won a MacArthur Genius Grant.

Excellent meals including seafood at Ironside and a bratwurst and sauerkraut at Liberty Station. I’m not sharing photos of that – you’re welcome – but here are some photos from the weekend:

women's march 2018 San Diego

Sam marched with us at the Women’s March downtown, since he’s been a furry feminist since birth. This sign was a favorite. (Notice the fun sky reflection in her sunglasses.)

seaweed at ocean beach, san diego

This uprooted kelp reminded me of some sort of beached animal. (On the morning walk with Sam.)

fountain, balboa park, san diego

I’ve always loved these fountains by the botanical gardens in Balboa Park.

fetch, dog beach, ocean beach, san diego

Sunset fetch at dog beach.

Yorkies, dog beach, ocean beach, san diego

And some mischievous pups getting reprimanded by mom.

surfers, ocean beach, san diego

The end of a good set. (But not for Sam – he only likes to get his paws wet.)

Great photos, Deonne! I love thinking of you there. Funny that Sam only likes to get his paws wet. When I first brought Ripley, she absolutely wouldn’t go into the water. So I had to wade way out (still only just-above-the-ankles deep), then I would turn and face her, bend at the waist, arms spread wide. She would then run to me, run as if I were the only person in the world. Then we’d run back to the shore together, and repeat. She loved it. You have to find what motivates, yes? With my girl, it was never playing with other dogs – it was playing with me. So seeing your photos brings all that happiness up in my chest…

Thanks, Michelle!I tried that when Sam was young and haven’t since, so maybe it’s time for another attempt. Thanks for the prompt. πŸ™‚

Enjoy San Diego! I have had the wonderful opportunity to housesit there twice this last year. Beach time, Balboa Park, zoo, art, more beach, Balboa Park, fresh croissants, and of course Balboa Park. Notice a pattern here?
