When Flora Get Competitive

I didn’t get much time to take photos in San Diego this weekend because my mother is so damn popular. If I hadn’t been with her I would have had far fewer social engagements, and could have spent more time with the camera.

I also wouldn’t have been able to help celebrate the birthday of the best mom on the planet. So there’s that.

We did manage to spend an afternoon at Balboa Park, where we visited the international houses and ate homemade strawberry pastry at the Czech house. Another good thing about Mom is that she’s full-blooded Bohemian, what the country was called a couple name changes before it became the Czech Republic. Which makes me half Bohemian, which is simply awesome.

We spent most of the time at the Botanical Gardens. I’m getting used to some new photography techniques and didn’t get as many good shots as I’d have liked, but I got a few. And really, it’s tough to go wrong when the flora is this gorgeous. In fact, the beauty was a bit overwhelming, as if every little plant was strutting and preening and practically forcing you to admire them. I suppose I’d be vain too if I looked like this:

But then there was the quieter beauty of this one. I fell in love with the veins on the leaves, if it’s possible to do such a thing. Maybe it’s Bohemian to love the strangeness in all things?
