I’m Going To Graceland

I didn’t know what to expect with Graceland, and I was pleasantly surprised. Elvis paid $100,000 for the property in the ’50s, and when you see it now it’s decorated as he left it in when he died in 1977. Which is to say AWESOME.

Elegant, right? In a retro way.

I covet that white couch.

Even if it’s not your style, you have to admit it was pretty tasteful for the 1970s. No avocado green anywhere.

But then I saw the pool room, and knew it was the real reason Elvis started abusing prescription drugs:

AAGGH!

Who wouldn’t need medication after looking at those fabric-covered walls and ceiling?

I went to Memphis for a fast weekend in June 2011 to visit a dying friend. Knowing it was likely the only time in my life I would ever be in that town, I made a point of also hitting Beale Street (for about an hour – SUPER-sketchy neighborhood [in fact, I’m not sure there are ANY good neighborhoods in Memphis, seriously]) and, of course, Graceland. Best bang for your buck EVER. I took the $35 tour and was there for probably three hours. Everyone should see it once.

Deborah – I agree that Graceland is an absolute must. Fascinating and, I thought, heartbreaking. Such a loss to lose Elvis so early. I didn’t spend a ton of time on Beale, not because of the sketchy factor, though there was that, but it just wasn’t that interesting. I did hear some great music, but mostly it was drunk college kids being obnoxious.
