News and Ruins

New products! I’m now selling greeting cards six to a box, with a mix of color and black & white, for $19.95 plus shipping. Email me to place your order.

Other news: I placed third in a photography contest, and there was even a prize! I’m thrilled. (I can’t officially announce which contest until the organization publishes the March issue of their magazine.)

News in travel: This weekend I head to Flagstaff, AZ, March is New Orleans, and in April I go with Mom to Nebraska (home to five National Parks!).

But to me, the biggest news is that I’ve finally landed on a book project, after a long time spent sorting and discarding ideas. (Since grad school, which is almost five years. Good grief.)

In retrospect, it seems obvious in light of all I’ve been doing. But here it is: I’m going to publish a series of books with photos and stories going state by state, covering the National Parks, natch, as well as small towns, quirk, and anything else that seems interesting. My home state of New Mexico is up first, and my plan is to have it out by fall. Hurray!

Meanwhile, here are a few more photos from my weekend in South Dakota. There had just been a fire at the shop on my uncle’s farm, and I found the ruins interesting and beautiful in their own destroyed way.

The little house was spared.

I love the waves of the roof.

  2. YAY, YAY, YAY!!! I’m doing a happy dance for you. (Well, in my imagination, because I’m too tired to physically dance today.)

Susan – I will never turn down a happy dance, even if it’s a psychic one. Thank you for all the enthusiasm!

Love these photos of ruins, serious images yet so many stories could be told around them. that my imagination tunes up when I see them. Congrats on the book too!

Susan – Yes, evocative images. You should have seen the whole landscape, with the burned-out ruins, the icy fog… it was eerily beautiful. And thanks for the good wishes! When I get back from AZ next week I’ll get out the map to pick my next NM Scamp for the book. Can’t wait.

Super big congrats on the contest!!! Always good to have “verification” from other sources I don’t care who you are. Your books sounds like a grand adventure, a lot of work and a lot of fun! I can’t wait to see how it all turns out so don’t forget to share progress as you go. I’m in awe of anyone taking on those big creative adventures – be they art, books, whatever. You GO GIRL!

Sherry – It is good! Especially because making any kind of art is mostly done in solitude, so it’s nice to let the outside world in once in awhile, ha. I’ll be sharing the process of creating the book as it goes, and thanks so much for the encouragement. It means a lot.

Congrats on the photo contest and the new cards! I love your book ideas. I feel like the national parks need more attention. We are lucky to have them for exploration and pleasure. The other reason I am excited about your book project is the fact that eventually you’ll have to make your way to Minnesota! Such haunting photos you put up on this post.

Manisha – Thank you! I agree about the parks, and it’s certainly a huge part of my mission to keep getting the word out about them. And I can’t wait to do a Minnesota book! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sort of related….at a park in N. Minneapolis (North Mississippi Regional park) there is this wonderful book about African Americans working in the national park systems. It is really great. And such an interesting way of looking at national parks that is inclusive to many different communities in the States. Many of the rangers/staff featured in the book are also Native American and representing many multicultural communities. It is one of the most unique national park books I’ve seen! This is not to suggest you must do something similar but rather suggesting a reference to check out sometime.
