Sequoia National Park

The first chunk of this last Scamp was clouded with smoke from all the wildfires in the West. The worst was at Sequoia National Park.

I had planned to stay a few days to really take in the beauty of the place, but the smoke was so bad it chased Sam and me out after one night. Itchy eyes, trouble breathing – it was tough to be there.

Sequoia smoke and sun

This was taken in the morning!

It was a bit clearer when you got up into the trees.

Sequoia nose

The trees have a lot of personality. I dubbed this one Jimmy Durante.

General Sherman Tree, Sequoia

The star of Sequoia is General Sherman, the largest tree by volume in the world. Note the tiny people on the lower left.

Sequoia family

It’s hard to capture the enormity of these trees with the camera. This is General Sherman surrounded by its family.

Sequoia is a must, and I’m disappointed I only got to spend a little time there. Definitely check it out if you’re in California – like Redwood National Park to the north, there’s much wisdom and experience with these trees, and they really do feel like sentient beings. I’m not ashamed to admit I hugged more than one on this Scamp, and next thing you know I’ll be throwing myself in front of logging trucks. (Ha ha! Just kidding, Mom!)

I was really disappointed that I couldn’t do any camping this summer. Even in Sacramento some smoke could be seen, and you could smell it. I hated to even go outside and breathe the air sometimes.

Martha – It was terrible and definitely unhealthy. Hoping next summer is better for all of us!

I felt the same way – and I hugged a number of trees!

I love those big old trees and the tales they could tell. I never really thought about it until I saw the Clatsop fir slab they had at Collier that showed years by each ring with the events of that year. Wow. Love your photos and I saw Jimmy there too!

Sherry – Exactly! It’s hard to get your head around how old they are. So glad you met Jimmy. He’s quite a character. πŸ™‚
