Derry or Londonderry?

It depends on who you ask.

But first, remember when I went to Ireland and Scotland, and said I’d post photos soon? Well, apparently in my world, soon means half a year or so. Sorry about that.

So, back to the beauty and wonder that is Ireland.

Derry/Londonderry was central to The Troubles, the three-decade conflict over (very basically) national identity. And the town of Derry, which straddles the River Foyle on the border of Ireland and Northern Ireland, goes by both names depending on how you feel about British rule. Derry = No thanks, or Londonderry = Yes please.

There’s obviously more to it than that, but it’s a fascinating place.

The River Foyle Runs Through It

Guildhall, the most beautiful city hall I’ve ever seen.

Guildhall as seen from the Peace Bridge.

One more view of it.

The pipe organ inside Guildhall. Just in case you didn’t think it was beautiful enough.

I was in leading-lines heaven there.

Check out the order in all those roofs!

Teenagers are the same everywhere.

Who knew people water skied in Ireland?

Sailboats under a threatening sky.

Just outside of town is the Grianan of Aileach, a 6th century ringfort.

The exterior view. It was easy to imagine the watch sitting on that wall, looking out for invaders.

Next up: Get ready for a whole lot more Ireland pics. πŸ™‚

I read this a couple days ago but hate typing on the stupid phone for comments. I love love the colors in these photos and what a thrill that you go to see so many lovely things. I love most that you aren’t a “travel” photographer taking JUST the sites but really looking into the sight of the place! Loved all the shots with the leading lines in them but still go back to the sailboats as a fave! πŸ™‚

Sherry – What a great reaction, thank you! (I totally get it about typing on the phone – I’ve become addicted to the microphone feature.) I appreciate the vote for the sailboats image – Ireland is such a ridiculously scenic place all around.

Deonne, I’m in love with the City Hall! I love seeing these urban photos – different from what you usually post, and yet still stunning. Great lines.

Michelle, isn’t it a beauty? I’d never seen one like it. And I’m glad you’re liking the urban photos, they were fun to shoot.
