The Birds (But Not the Hitchcock Kind)

Sure, African mammals are wonderful, but let’s give the birds of Tanzania some love, shall we?

This might be the bird you think of first when you think of Africa:

Ostrich and flamingos Ngorongoro Crater

This big male ostrich (the females are dusky brown) was trotting off somewhere in the Ngorongoro Crater. That interesting pink line in the background? Flamingos! I had no idea they lived anywhere except the San Diego Zoo and trailer park lawns.

Duck family drinking

From the huge to the small. No idea what kind of ducks these are, but they sure were sweet. Bonus points for the adorable duck butt on the left.

golden crowned cranes swooping Tanzania

We saw these golden crowned cranes with the hippos, but this time it’s just cranes by themselves in the crater. Gorgeous.

Vulture swooping Serengeti

Okay, this might actually be like the movie The Birds. Something had been killed and abandoned by a predator in the grass, and these vultures were swooping in to feed. And swooping, and swooping, and swooping. I confess I was feeling a bit like Tippi Hedren at the number of them coming down out of the sky from seemingly nowhere. There were dozens.

Kati Kati cranes sunset Tanzania

I snuck out into the dusk of camp without the required guide for this image of cranes in the Serengeti sunset. I apparently have no fear of becoming a lion snack when it comes to a nice shot.

    Wonderful,shots!
And by the way, a flamingo lives in my front yard. A metal sculpture, not the trailer park kind!
