Piggly Wiggly Gets Cultured
The Pink Palace Museum is housed in what was the home/mansion of the founder of the Piggly Wiggly grocery store chain. (I know it seems strange to have the words museum and Piggly Wiggly in the same sentence, but go with it.) The Palace features a natural history section, an IMAX theater, and an especially great section covering the history of Memphis. Well worth a […]
Photo of the Day: Sam the Wonder Pup
My very best co-pilot.
One Stark Tree at Cades Cove, Tennessee
I planned my visit to Tennessee in March assuming it would be warm and lushly green, based on intensive research of historical data. (Meaning I looked at Weather.com once and noted that the season would change from winter to spring during my trip.)
Too Sad to Appreciate BBQ
I’m back, after 4300 miles and almost three weeks on the road. A big part of exploring any place is the food, and I had four or five good barbecue meals on my Southern swing. Because what’s the South without barbecue? (Okay fine, there’s also the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, the birth of the blues and country music. Details.)
I’m Going To Graceland
I didn’t know what to expect with Graceland, and I was pleasantly surprised. Elvis paid $100,000 for the property in the ’50s, and when you see it now it’s decorated as he left it in when he died in 1977. Which is to say AWESOME.
Scamp Porn 6: Live Nude Ducks (video)
Memphis, TN is a great town for so many reasons, but this may win for the cutest. (Filmed at the Peabody Hotel.) Save
Oklahoma City National Memorial
I’m now in Tennessee, but two states ago I visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial that remembers the 168 people (including 19 children) who died in the 1995 bombing.
Mary and Jesus in Guam
I must be feeling bad about saying no one should ever go to Guam, because I feel compelled to post another beautiful photo from that weekend, as if I’m a schoolyard bully having a change of heart. If only I’d taken a picture of the spectacular jerk chicken I had at a Jamaican restaurant, we’d have proof of the trilogy of good things from my […]
Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
When I was in Hawaii the volcanoes weren’t active at Volcanoes National Park, so if you’re cheated out of lava-flow photo ops, what else can you take pictures of?
