Arizona Skies at the Desert Museum in Tucson

I’m fascinated by contrasts: light and dark, diffuse and focused. These photos of desert plants framed by the gorgeous Arizona sky are a good study in that kind of dichotomy.

…And Now for the Flora (Desert Museum, Tucson)

Most of us think of cactuses (yep, that’s an acceptable plural, for you writers out there) as harsh little creatures. I happen to love them, despite the trouble they’ve caused me in the past. (Hence my idea to change Arizona’s motto to “Land of the poky, stingy, and stabby.”)

Birds and Beavers at the Desert Museum, Tucson

I just got back from Tucson, Arizona where I had a fabulous time with a dear friend I’ve known since junior high and her equally dear husband.

Looking for the Sun in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia

Mom and I just got back from a trip to Nova Scotia where we had exactly one day of sun. Did that put a damper (zing!) on the Kahler mood? Please.

Making Apologies at the Buckhorn Exchange in Denver

I was just in Denver visiting the lovely and talented Garrett Hacking, and the first thing he wanted to do was check out The Buckhorn Exchange, a bar and steakhouse that opened in Denver in 1893. Emphatic in Buena Vista, Colorado

Buena Vista, CO is a tiny town northwest of Salida, and even though it’s a sleepy little burg, it’s not lacking in attitude. The coffee is strong (The Roastery is a must), the beer is hoppy (try Eddyline – the wood-fired pizza is good, too), and the signs are demanding:

Subterfuge at Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville

If you visit the South, you have to see at least one plantation. I took the tour at Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville, and heard stories about what happened there during the Civil War (the main house got shot up a bit), the families who lived there (worthy of any modern-day soap opera), and how it was a legendary horse-breeding farm (producing Iroquois, a horse […]

Songbirds and Greeks in Nashville

Nashville is home to Music Row, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and is the capital of Tennessee, but despite all that the city feels pretty soulless. (Whereas Memphis is loaded with soul, in all senses of the word.)

Fashion Inspiration at the Country Music Hall of Fame

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville is a must. I don’t care if you don’t even like country music – if you’ve ever listened to the radio, you’re going to find something relevant and interesting. Not to be missed.
