I titled the post this because a) it’s what the national monument is called, and b) it sounds likeΒ  jibberish. As if I, apropos of nothing, announced, “Millard Fillmore Batik Scarf Squadron.”

Which would be equally amusing – or maybe that’s just me.

But the truth is, the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon – which includes the aforementioned Painted Hills Unit – is worth taking seriously for the gorgeous landscape alone. I didn’t make it to the fossils part because, well, I don’t get super excited about old bones (joke alert!), plus they don’t make for stunning photographs.

But I did get super excited about these beautiful hills.

Sexy, no?

I couldn’t get enough of that red stripe.

Or those curves.

So I’ve added this to my list of “National Parks I had no expectations for but turned out to be pretty great.” It happens on every Scamp.
